Which Covenant Are You Under?

Covenants have been a way to establish a promise or agreement between God and His children from the beginning of time. The first time we see an agreement made between God and man is in the Garden of Eden. God tells Adam in Genesis 2:15-17 "The Lord God commanded the man, saying, "You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die." Unfortunately, in this covenant, man did not uphold his end of the deal and death entered into the Earth.

Covenants are meant to legally bind and establish a relationship while outlying specific obligations and restrictions for all parties involved. Knowing that a covenant is a legal agreement, should show one the severity of the promises and agreements being made. Covenants should not be taken lightly. So why since the beginning of time has man not understood the seriousness of covenants? It's simple, because we have not understood the spiritual realm; we are naive to the things around us that our eyes cannot see. The devil prowls throughout the Earth looking to lead people astray from the promises God made with them. These promises are received through obedience, faith and yielding to the Holy Spirit. But, if the devil can convince you that God is not a man of His word, then you will fall for the same tricks Eve did in the garden and eat of the fruits of disobedience, not trusting God's words and yielding to demonic forces.

The spiritual realm is like a big courthouse. We have the Judge, whom is God. Then we have the plaintiff, whom is the devil. Lastly, we have the defendant, the person whom the plaintiff is suing because they have broken their covenant with God. The Bible tells us in Revelation 12:10 that "the accuser of our brothers and sisters accuses them before our God day and night." The plaintiff, the devil, spends every second of the day watching to see if you have broken your covenant with God so that he can plead his case in the spiritual courtroom and you can die. But thankfully, the blood of Jesus speaks a better word over us when we repent of our sins and come under the authority of the blood. The blood of Jesus is the highest authority. When we repent and reenter the covenant of Jesus, His blood covers a multitude of sins, failures, mistakes, and covenant breaking.

The devil spends his entire time looking for ways to get you to stay in a state of sin and carnal ways so you won't be under the protection of the blood of Jesus. When you are not under this protection, the devil and his tricky demons look for ways to get you under demonic covenants so he can bind you legally to him. Once under these covenants, you subject yourself to demonic attacks and God's judgement. A few ways he gets you under demonic covenants is through speaking word curses over yourself and others, unforgiveness, pride, sexual intercourse outside of marriage, fraternities and sororities where you pledge an oath to false gods, witchcraft, hanging with the wrong crowd of people, drugs and drinking, etc.

In Joshua 9-10, we see how entering into a covenant with the wrong people can bring forth issues you would never have had if you weren't aligned with them. Joshua and the Israelites had just recently defeated many mighty nations and kingdoms with the help of the Lord. Many heard of their winning streaks and were terrified because they knew that they were in covenant with the true living God and they couldn't compete with them. So, the people of Gibeon devised a plan to trick the Israelites into thinking they had come from far away as ambassadors of the Lord and asked to be in a covenant with them. They brought gifts and even dressed as if they had traveled a long journey, when in reality they were next in the path of people close by who should have been destroyed as well. They flattered Joshua and the Israelites with their words and "honored" them with their lips and gifts. Instead of consulting God, whom they were in covenant with about this matter, Joshua and the Israelites judged in the flesh rather than in the Spirit and accepted the offer. Shortly after they found out that they had been lied to and had been tricked into a covenant with them. Fast forward to chapter 10. Adonizedek, King of Jerusalem was not pleased that the great royal people of Gibeon feared and asked to be in a covenant with the Israelites, so he plotted with other kings on how to take out Gibeon- the Israelites new ally.

The people of Gibeon heard this and feared. They went to Joshua and said help us, you are in covenant with us now. So now the Israelites had to fight a battle that they probably would not have had too if they never went into covenant with the Gibeonites. Thankfully, God still loved His people and brought forth victory from that battle.

This story serves as a reminder that when making covenants you take on everything that comes with the person you are making it with, blessings, curses, judgements, battles, etc. This is why it is so important that we are in covenant with God first and consult with Him about everything because once you agree to be associated with someone or something you give rights in the spiritual realm to encounter whatever comes with it.

Take sometime today to ask God are there any areas in my life where I have made covenants or oaths to people, things, or places that goes against Your Word? As the Holy Spirit reveals to you these areas repent for doing so, renounce your affiliation with those things and come under the covenant of the blood of Jesus once again.
